Why study a school year in the United States?
Its flexible educational system, strong support for international students, cultural diversity, and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the American way of life make the United States a very attractive destination. Who hasn’t wanted to live there?
The United States also offers incredible academic guidance and support services. For example, students qualified for research receive support, guidance in choosing their educational path, and encouragement to choose complementary activities related to that choice. In other words, they will guide you to continue making your own decisions that will always bring you closer to your goals. Because, what do you want to achieve?
Educational methodology in the United States
The American education system is highly regarded, and its student body includes thousands of international students from all over the world.
- Secondary Education (Junior / Middle School): Grades 7, 8 and 9 (1st – 3rd ESO).
- Higher Education (High School): From Grade 10 to 12 (4th ESO – 2nd Bachillerato).
The school calendar runs from mid-August to early July. It can be divided into two semesters or three quarters.
They combine theory and practice in highly participatory classes. Debates are held, and teachers frequently ask questions, encouraging learning and developing skills such as argumentation and public speaking, which in turn helps improve self-esteem and personality development.
A school year abroad is much more than just a school year in another country. It’s an opportunity to acquire skills that will be useful throughout your life.
Wide range of sports and cultural offerings
It’s not all about studying! Team sports have a high profile in many high schools. In the United States, it’s considered very important for you to participate in the social, athletic, and cultural life of the school.
They also organize many other activities: science and nature clubs, music organizations, art and drama groups, and language clubs. Did you know that almost every school has a student-run newspaper?
Types of school
Public Schools. Ninety-nine percent of American students attend these schools and are funded by local governments. These schools are generally coeducational and culturally diverse.
Private Schools & Independent Schools. Ten percent of students attend these schools and are funded by the student body and/or private religious or secular institutions. The student-teacher ratio is lower than in public schools, and the sports facilities are excellent. They can be co-educational, all-girls, or all-boys.
At Plan Zero, we’ll help you choose the option that’s right for you.
J1 Program
Do you want to experience a cultural exchange with an American family?
This program consists of a cultural exchange visa between American families and international students. It is managed by non-profit organizations authorized by the United States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
It’s important to note that the J1 is not an academic exchange, so course level, participation in sports clubs, or special graduation are not guaranteed.
The destination locations are usually small, quiet rural towns where it’s easier for students to join sports teams or other activities because they don’t have the competition from larger cities.
It lasts one school year (10 months) or one semester (5 months).
It is only awarded once to each student.
In this program, you cannot choose a school; the host family selects the student. You can choose a region or state for an additional fee, but they don’t guarantee that they will be able to fulfill your request.

F1 Program
This program is designed to offer greater flexibility and the ability to fully customize your experience. You’ll be able to choose from numerous public schools—there are over 50 public school districts to choose from!—or private schools, both boarding and day schools.
Depending on your choice, you can stay with a host family or in the residence halls of the elite boarding school. Tell us your interests, goals, and budget, and we’ll create a customized academic year program in the United States.
