SWEDEN

Sweden is recognized worldwide for its excellence in higher education. Despite its relatively small size, it is home to some of the best universities in the world. This is demonstrated in the international rankings where it stands out, such as the Times Higher Education, World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong.

In Sweden, there are around 50 Universities (universitet), more focused on research, and University Colleges (högskola) generally more focused on Applied Sciences.

If you decide to study in Sweden, you should know that some of the oldest universities are: Lund University, where you can study a wide variety of international degrees, masters and doctoral studies, and even coincide with the newly named 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics, Professor Anne L’Huillier!; and Uppsala University, of enormous international prestige and recognized with first place in the European Union in the QS Word University Ranking in the sustainability section.
Most of these centers are public, but some are private higher education institutions, such as Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Jönköping University or the Stockholm School of Economics.

Yeah! Sweden offers a wide variety of degree programs in English, with more than 1,000 programs available, including more than 100 bachelor’s programs and more than 900 master’s programs. This makes studying a university degree in Sweden or pursuing other higher studies accessible to international students who wish to study in an English-speaking environment.

Additionally, Sweden consistently ranks among the best countries in the world for non-native English speakers. Students can easily get by in English everywhere, from the classroom to the city center. Of course, although Swedish is not a requirement, learning a little of the language can provide a deeper understanding of the country and add fun to the experience.

The teaching model applied in Swedish universities and colleges is based on the motto “freedom with responsibility”. Much of the learning process occurs outside the classroom, where students carry out their studies independently or in groups. Group work is essential, as it encourages collaborative learning, helps develop skills, make better decisions, manage time and improve interpersonal skills. This approach simulates the dynamics of international work environments, where teamwork across cultures is the norm.

If you decide to study a university degree in Sweden you should know that you will be expected to take full responsibility for your own learning, look for answers beyond the textbooks and question what you are taught. The promotion of critical thinking is a fundamental pillar of the Swedish educational system, and students are encouraged to debate and discuss with other students and teachers.

At Plan Zero we understand that this educational approach is vital to training the citizens of the future: capable, critical and decisive.

Sweden is known as one of the most egalitarian countries in the world, and this equality is reflected in its university education system. Students of all backgrounds feel that the country welcomes them, regardless of gender, religion, country of origin or socioeconomic situation. Additionally, there is no upper age limit at Swedish universities, providing an opportunity for lifelong education.

Swedish society is informal and non-hierarchical, so people who study relate to their teachers in an environment of equality. All people are called by their name, without the need for titles. The atmosphere you’ve always wanted, right?

University fees for any student from the European Union are free. And there is no application fee when you apply either!

Higher education in Sweden is largely funded by taxes. Students from Sweden, EU/EEA and Switzerland do not pay tuition fees.
