Why volunteer at Zajac Ranch?
Zajac Ranch is a nonprofit organization that organizes subsidized summer camps for children with special needs (Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, etc.). Located in the mountains on the shores of beautiful Stave Lake, just an hour from Vancouver, it’s the perfect opportunity to experience a life-changing experience abroad.
Zajac Ranch is located in Mission, British Columbia, on Stave Lake, approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Vancouver. The best way to get there from Spain is to fly into Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The camp is nestled in the beautiful Golden Ears Mountain Range, with plenty of options for nature day trips.
What do you do during volunteering?
The volunteer program allows you to participate as a support instructor in outdoor activities with the camp’s children. These activities include hiking, swimming, canoeing, climbing, and more.
The program length is flexible, but requires a minimum commitment of four weeks in the fall/winter and ten weeks in the spring/summer. You will typically work five days a week, Monday through Friday, with the weekend free.
What will you do?
- You will ensure that children wake up on time and get ready for their activities
- Assist activity leaders with their group (archery, canoeing, kayaking, arts and crafts, drama, swimming, camp games, campfires, and talent shows).
- Eating with children
- Getting campers ready for bed
- Cabin cleaning
- Managing Camper Behavior
- Assist with camp events (e.g., evening programs, bonfires, theme days, etc.)
There are several positions available:
• Camp monitor
• Activity leader (previous experience in sports or special skills preferred)
• Medical volunteers (requires first aid and CPR knowledge)
Where will I stay?
Staff accommodations at Zajac Ranch are included in the program fees and consist of a shared dormitory-style room with a private bathroom, shared kitchen, and common area. Volunteers are welcome to use all ranch facilities during their free time, including the staff-only gym, pool, and lake access.
Each volunteer is expected to sleep one night a week in a room with the children.
Check-in is possible every Sunday, and check-out is on Saturday.
The volunteer program starts on Mondays.
