Why volunteer in Lake Louise?
Lake Louise is the jewel of Banff National Park and the Canadian Rockies, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a perfect place that deserves every effort to preserve it.
Did you know that Lake Louise Ski Resort was the first in the Canadian Rockies to introduce an Environmental Management Department? They oversee the ski resort’s daily operations to ensure compliance with environmental and health standards in all operations and development projects, such as water conservation, waste management and recycling efforts, and support for staff in university-level research. Additionally, their Educational Services Department develops and oversees their interpretive programs and guided tours.
As a volunteer with the Lake Louise Nature Conservancy, you’ll find personal inspiration and connection with nature, learn about and contribute to conservation, support the community, and experience behind-the-scenes management of Canada’s favorite ski resort.
This is a unique opportunity to explore the Canadian Rockies alongside Canadian and international volunteers: you’ll learn, do, connect, and celebrate as a team; you’ll find personal inspiration and connection with nature, the community, and others; you’ll explore and contribute to the preservation, conservation, and beautification of aesthetic resources. What more could you ask for?
What do you do during volunteering?
Volunteering takes place through activities at Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and with local groups in Yoho National Park, such as the Friends of Yoho and the Kickinghorse Ski Club, community-based initiatives, and occasional trips to Kootenay National Park.
What will you do?
The program lasts four weeks. You’ll work five days, eight hours a day (usually Monday through Friday) and have two days off. Activities available, depending on your needs at the time, include:
- Recovery using topsoil or turf, planting and fertilization
- Assists with restoration projects, including the removal of invasive species
- Maintenance of cycling, hiking and cross-country ski trails
- Native landscaping and planting of small trees or shrubs, placement and maintenance of planters
- Mountain cleaning
- Hiking and reporting on basic trail status updates one day (weather permitting)
- Public safety work (volunteer assistance to educate and remind visitors and guests that they are in a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Where will I stay?
You will stay in the Charleston staff residence. Each volunteer will have a private single room in a shared unit with other members of the volunteer team.
