Banff National Park

Be part of something big: Banff National Park is the perfect setting for fun, hands-on learning, and giving back to Canada’s most iconic national park. Banff is experiencing the social and environmental impact of overtourism, and volunteers are involved in monitoring, measuring, and mitigating the impacts of 4.3 million visitors on the delicate mountain ecosystem, home to iconic wildlife such as grizzly bears, wolves, and cougars.

Banff has been a world leader in ecological integrity, and participants in this program have the opportunity to experience and learn about this firsthand while honing their observation, critical thinking, outdoor activity, and leadership skills.

Explore the Natural Wonder of the Rocky Mountains: Banff National Park, located in the majestic Canadian Rockies, is a nature lover’s paradise. Imagine working around snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and lush forests. As a volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to explore scenic trails, spot wildlife, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this unique place.

Contribute to Conservation and Environmental Education: By joining the volunteer program in Banff, you’ll be playing a crucial role in environmental preservation. You’ll participate in habitat restoration projects, species monitoring, and visitor education activities. You’ll also work alongside conservation experts and learn about the importance of protecting our natural resources for future generations. Essential to becoming a #changeMaker

For volunteering in Banff National Park, we have three planned periods for 2024:

  • June 11 to July 8
  • July 9 to August 5
  • August 6 to September 2

All intakes are on Tuesdays, and the first day of orientation is on Wednesday.
Volunteer programs end on Sundays, and departure is on Monday.

The Banff National Park volunteer program lasts four weeks (which can be combined to create an 8- or 12-week program) and can be complemented with several weeks of English language courses.

Volunteers work an average of 5 days, 8 hours per day, and enjoy 2 days off.

• You’ll have the opportunity for continued learning about Banff National Park through group activities, daily park work, and special park events.

• You will represent the Park and communicate with park visitors. You will hike trails and observe, record, and report on trail conditions, wildlife sightings, and ecological indicators.

• You’ll also participate in trail maintenance work, invasive weed removal and cleanup, and wildlife fence inspections.

• You will assist with environmental science, research, and monitoring projects. You will participate in special events, cultural heritage programming, and Indigenous ceremonies, and assist with responsible promotions through social media.

• Each month is different, but there is always a variety of activities and locations. Every effort is made to gradually develop volunteers’ individual skills and the strengths of the group. For example, projects and hikes will start more easily and become more challenging over the four weeks.

The accommodation will take you to 2 different destinations: 3 weeks at the Banff Alpine Centre Hostel and 1 week at the Castle Mountain Hostel

Volunteers share spacious dormitories with six beds, with lockable storage in each room. All linens are provided. You’ll also have access to the laundry facilities. You can buy your own food and use the hostel’s fully equipped kitchen and spacious dining area. Alternatively, you can dine in the bar/restaurant and use the large common room and free Wi-Fi.
